BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE: SAN FRANCISCO, 1906

Dionysio Spiliotopoulos writes:

This is a fascinating movie. A camera was mounted on the front of a street

car in San Francisco 105 years ago (1906). Perhaps the oldest "home movie"
that you will ever see! I watched it a couple of times. Look at the hats
the ladies were wearing and the long dresses. Some of the cars had the
steering wheels on the right side. I wonder when they standardized on the
left? Sure were still a lot of horse drawn vehicles in use. Mass transit
looked like the way to get around. Looks like everybody had the right of

way.
Watch the beginning carefully. At the 33 second mark and immediately after
an oncoming trolley clears the screen, a well dressed policeman walks across
the street from left to right. Notice his right hand that he's carrying a
truncheon (26 inch police baton) and although he appears walking his beat,
he looks ready to use it. Imagine the police of today walking down the
street carrying a 26 inch club in their hand???
This film was "lost" for many years. It was the first 35mm film ever. The number of
automobiles is staggering for 1906. The clock tower at the end of Market
Street at the Embarcadero wharf is still there.
How many "street cleaning" people were employed to pick up after the horses?
Talk about going green!
This film was originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the
Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was shot. From
New York trade papers announcing the film showing to the wet streets from
recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather
and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he
even knows who owned them and when the plates were issued!). It was filmed
only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18, 1906
and shipped by train to NY for processing.

A great city then and now. Always subject to earthquakes, unfortunately. Ah well, clear away the rubble and build something better!

I am surprised there were no accidents,. Reminds me of a street where I live, busy all the time, lots of people and vehicles, with people cutting in front of people, in vehicle or not, doing crazy stuff. I have seen an accident, or almost accident, almost every single day, and I only pass by there about twice a day, to and from home.

That was a very interesting piece of film, SF before, JUST before, the earthquake that destroyed so much of the city. Incredible.

That was really interesting. It's amazing the changes that have taken place in less than 100 years.

I have great respect for (one of) the inventors of motion movies: LOUIS LUMIERE (1864 - 1948), developed 35 mm celluloid film with perforated edge.
Poor bastard went bankrupt twice and died in obscurity.

I watched quite a few the early silent films, more documentaries really, there is a French film (Luminiére brothers 1895) that I found equally touching, to think that all of those people, even the kids, are passed on. That they have left the world to us to sort out, develope or ruin is quite a thought especially when we see them doing just what we do, wait for trams, busses, dodge traffic, try to dress well and maintain our dignity.

This Berliner Strassen film from 1900 - 1914 is in the same vein as the San Francisco one. This Berlin one shot not long before WWI laid waste to so many of the people and places and the life style the camera is describing. Sobering are these films.

And some musical accompaniment from that era (early 1900s):

And from approximately seventy years later, and over forty years ago:

The Story Of The Kelly Gang (1906).

Edward "Ned" Kelly (June 1854/June 1855 – 11 November 1880)
a folk hero and symbol of Irish-Australian resistance against oppression.

God, I love it.

I have the San Francisco street clips saved from an email last year. I have the PBS documentaries on the building of the Golden Gate and the Empire State bldg and the Brooklyn Bridge. The throwing of the hot rivets into the metal cone catchers mesmerized me. And you could feel the cold wind in the New York winter and the danger as these guys hung on so happy to have a job. Those images stick with me. I am thrilled that it impresses others too.

Jesus, that is a scary bit of footage, those guys were both brave and quite nuts. Riveting film though....

On gentler note, from Halifax, England, 1902....

Interesting editorial note on with regard to genre.
