If you want to make a business work, you have to move with the times. Sense changes in the environment, and make changes in your behaviour. Charles...

If you want to make a business work, you have to move with the times. Sense changes in the environment, and make changes in your behaviour. Charles Darwin teaches us that change has been an important feature in the development of most of the organisms that we would consider to be successful today.

So, you want to do auditing? Fine. Talking therapies can work. You could learn how to administer a talking therapy with a few hours of study: consider the training that the volunteers who man the telephones at The Samaritans get. And they definitely help people, so it can be done.

But... do you really need “hip hip hooray” to make a talking therapy work? No. When the Dianetics was first published, it stood on its own – there was only the book, to cause the sensation.

Was the charismatic figure of L Ron Hubbard needed to promote the book? Not really. Actually, it was Hubbard’s greed that brought an end to the first era of Dianetics. If he’d played nice with his business partners, who knows where Dianetics might be now? But instead, Dianetics failed, and we got Scientology instead, and it started masquerading as a ‘religion’ and Ron established himself firmly in control... and that set in motion a whole lot of events that have led to where we are today, with Scientology on its knees.

The really, really big question has to be: is LRH an asset to the Scientologist, nowadays?

You say ‘Scientology’ to a member of the public, and they grab their children and back away from you. Yes they do: you can’t deny it. Nobody wants Scientology anymore. It has to be wrapped up, concealed in a “free stress test” or a “drug rehab program”. And why? Because of L Ron Hubbard.

If a member of the public knows anything at all about LRH, they’ll have heard that he wrote science fiction. (“And a new-age religion? Excuse me while I get my coat.”) If they know more about Hubbard, they’ll know about his bigamous marriage to Sara Northrup... or his comical war record... or his being declared ‘persona non grata’ in England... or being found guilty of fraud in France... or... need I go on?

The man is, quite simply, a PR disaster. If we were talking about any other Scientology member, he’d have been disowned years ago. Like Charles Manson, or Wally Hanks, or Rex Fowler.

Hubbard is not good PR... and the longer you spend trying to rehabilitate him, the more stale Scientology becomes.

Instead of trying to sugar-coat the unpalatable truth about one of Scientology’s major authors, you should be devoting your efforts to a re-write that would get rid of as much of the LRH content as possible. There are a number of reasons why this would make very good sense.

Hubbard was a proven racist.

Hubbard abandoned his wives, and children.

Hubbard got very, very rich, while his followers lived in misery.

Hubbard committed treason against the US government.

Hubbard produced some truly embarrassing work in the fields of music and literature.

Etc.

It might seem ‘brave’ and ‘loyal’ to defend the legend of L Ron Hubbard, but all you’d be doing would be devoting your energies to attempting to stem the flow of criticism against a long-dead dictator. That time and effort would be much better spent – as is desperately needed – in actually getting the ‘Tech’ to work.

Because it doesn’t, does it?

Show me a clear. Show me some ESP. Show me something useful – anything – that isn’t mere “feelings” that are entirely subjective. Scientology isn’t working. It’s become a hobby to a few dozen people who can’t agree on anything, and a ‘game’ that’s measured in terms of empty square footage, by an asthmatic midget usurper who stole your cult 26 years ago and shows no sign of doing anything useful with it.

So you can scratch your heads in puzzlement for the rest of your lives, or as long as you choose to devote to trying to decipher the drug-fuelled ramblings of a dead man, trying to figure out what he meant by his Space Opera briefings and why his “whole track recall” is at odds with so much of what science has taught us in the years since his death... or you can try to Get Scientology Working.

And... shock, horror! GSW will involve making a lot of changes to the ‘Tech’ as it has been taught to-date. And why? Because the ‘Tech’ never got finished. “Mankind’s greatest friend” created this “fantastic thing”; he wrote the “most important books ever”... and then he never bothered to check the manuscripts for transcription errors, or re-wrote things so that ordinary people could make the ‘Tech’ work. Because he was busy crashing his motorbike on Tenerife, and then setting up a jazz band, for a POS album... and so on.

Get it into your heads: LRH was lazy. He was a lazy fucker, and he never finished what he started. But that’s okay, because you can finish it. And you can sell thousands of copies of your book, if you can just figure out how to GSW. Imagine that: you can save Scientology.

Or you can choose the easier, ‘safer’ option. Go ahead: denounce me as an evil apostate, and prove your ‘devotion’ to Ron. (He can’t hear you because he’s dead, but go ahead and do it if it makes you feel safer.) It will doom your branch of the Cheapzone to failure, because 100% Standard Tech is what everybody else is also trying to offer, as well. Selling the same old shit as last year, and as everyone else? That’s bad for business. What you need is less Ron, not more.

In the same way that military aircraft have self-sealing fuel tanks, maybe humanity has self-sealing wallets. L Ron Hubbard robbed quite a few people, back in the day... but he’s dead and gone, and his reputation is entirely tarnished, now. The more you adhere to LRH, the less money you’re going to make.

Which suits me just fine, because a lot of Cheapzoners deserve nothing but a whole pail of fail, which is something they seem to have dedicated the remainder of their lives to.

(An oldie that somebody recently hit 'likes' for. I read it again, and decided to blog it... because it might help somebody to recover from Scientology abuse. You never know!)

If the victims had been permitted to talk about their case while they were in Scientology, they probably wouldn't have stayed in Scientology as long as they did.

Talking with peers, they would rapidly have discovered what was potentially one of the most damaging facts about Scientology: that they were not alone.

By establishing a prohibition on 'discussing your case', Hubbard was able to construct a society in which the most mentally agile of his victims became the most unsure of themselves. Those who saw the flaws in the Tech were made to feel that they were members of a minority, 'being stupid' for failing to understand.

Dianetics and Scientology established a culture where fake 'certainty' was the most reassuring commodity, and where free thought was punished and disincentivised via mechanisms including bullying (overboarding, "ethics" and the RPF gulag) and financial coercion (how are you going to afford the all-important 'bridge' if they keep making you repeat levels?) Naturally, this was a society in which the most brutish, least conventionally educated and most zealous or unquestioning will tend to rise to the top. Witness the current leader figures in Scientology and its offshoots.

Bad science fiction was all the rage, back in the day. It’s only fair that Ron should have wanted a piece of the action... and boy, did he make up...

Bad science fiction was all the rage, back in the day. It’s only fair that Ron should have wanted a piece of the action... and boy, did he make up for lost time... with some bad science fiction with more plot holes than a cemetery. Ron is dead now, as we all shall be, someday... but if you happen to run into him thereafter, in the ‘next galaxy over’, please try to get him to address some of these obvious problems...

If the each of the 76 planets in Galactic Overlord Xenu’s sector contained on average 178 billion people... how many space-faring DC8 look-alike starships were available to transport this population? That’s 13,350,000,000 people, if we assume that the people on one planet (Teegeeack) didn’t need to be transported. A DC8 carries a maximum of 259 economy-class passengers, so to move them all requires 51,544,402 return journeys to be made. So how big was the space fleet, and couldn’t the resources required be used to do something more sensible to solve overpopulation? The price of 51,544,402 space trips would have bought a lot of condoms. Or Sea Org-style abortions.

Why is it that something like ten of the twelve volcanoes named by Hubbard as sites for the atomic bomb blasts at the core of Xenu’s nefarious scheme didn’t actually exist 75 million years ago?

If you’ve already immobilised a guy and stuck him in the lung with a mixture of ‘frozen alcohol and glycol’... why not just drop him into a star, and skip all the embarrassing volcano shit? Why not stab him in the lung with a dagger, instead of messing about with a hypodermic?

Having been caught by ‘sticky electronic beams’ after they have been exteriorised from their bodies by murder, why would captive thetans that are going to roam around the place for 75,000,000 years be implanted with information about Christianity - something which would only become relevant in the last 2,000 years of their stay on Earth?

‘Solving overpopulation’ doesn’t normally involve killing everybody. Isn’t that kind of counterproductive? I mean, you’d want some people left in your empire, wouldn’t you? If so... where are they now?

If the ‘Loyal Officers’ were finally able to overthrow Xenu and lock him up... why didn’t they clear up the mess he created? Why didn’t they either vacuum up all the loose thetans again and assist them, or destroy them... or simply sterilise Teegeeack, so that no host bodies or future victims would evolve?

Why is the bad guy’s name sometimes spelled Xenu, and sometimes Xemu, anyway?

And finally, Ron... what the fuck were you smoking?

In the old days, Scientology craved respectability and a kind of legitimacy, and reinventing itself as a pseudoreligion back in the fifties fitted those goals well. Now they seem to be about to cast off their religious cloaking. The bizarre actions that are committed in Scientology's name and in full view of interested parties do nothing to shore up Scientology's image as a faith of some kind; quite the opposite. Squirrel Busters is only the latest in example of a blunder that no real church would order.

This is amusing to see, but what will the cult become next? It's already tried to present itself (with varying degrees of success) as a rehab clinic, an educational system, a form of medicine, a 'navy', a seller of vitamins, a music label, a business network, a publisher, a spy ring, and of course a new-age 'religion'. So what on Earth is next?

Whatever it is, you can be sure that it'll be two things: funny "ha ha", and funny peculiar.
