I dropped MrsBLiP off at the airport this afternoon. She's away for the week on business which means I'm batching it for next six nights. As much as I love MrsBLiP, and I'm going to miss her to bits, there's something quite nice about having the place to myself. One of the real treats I'm looking forward to is that I don't have to cook.

Yes. As surprising as it may seem, there are some Kiwi males who do the household cooking. I've actually got quite good at it over the years. Its winter here at the moment, so I'm always boiling up some warming soup. Pumpkin and ginger is my current favourite. Winter is also the time of year that I find myself falling off the vegetarian diet. When its freezing cold outside and you come home from a hard day's yakka, there's nothing quite as nourishing and as equally easy to prepare as a slow-cooked stew. The added advantage to this menu is that you can set it all up on Sunday night and, during the week, get three days worth of dinner and/or lunch by just heating up portions. Both the soup and the stew actually improve over the course of the week as I add bits and pieces left over from other meals.

But this week, I don't have to do any of that. Its my week off; a fortunate happenstance to continue one of my life quests: to create the perfect sandwich. Ideally, I want a unique blend of the five main food groups to produce a healthy, delicious, easy sandwich quickly. I think I'm starting to get close: organic soft white bread, peanut butter, raisins, and lettuce. Oh, c'mon! Don't make that face! Its beautiful. MrsBLiP agrees with me - in part: she says its unique because I am the only person in the world who likes it ; )

This week I am going to work on the "dessert" sandwich. On the way home from the airport, I bought some bits and pieces to commence experiments. I'm thinking: organic soft white bread, honey, chocolate-hazelnut spread, wine-biscuits (which I'm going to crumble-in for a bit of texture), and Kiwifruit. Probably not that healthy, but might provide a base from which to try other options. Rock melon, maybe?

Don't forget the vegemite or whatever black rot you kiwis are so fond of....

Heh! Yeah - that vegemite is a shocker. Dunno why but maybe once a month or so I suddenly have this craving for it and end up smearing it over half a dozen crackers. Horrible, horrible stuff but can't seem to do without it. ; )
