    30/10/09: Pt 3 - Scientology

The Church of Scientology has had a very bad week. First, Canadian director Paul Hagis quit over the church's refusal to denounce an anti-gay marriage bill in California. Then a French court found some of the Church's French leaders guilty of fraud. We're asking how all this will affect the church.

While some of the things Marty said didn't sit well with me at all, I think it was a good interview, and more good media which I'm thankful for.

In that part 3 podcast, Marty did the usual by painting DM as the evil one and Hubbard as the saint.

The interviewer should have done her homework beforehand and then asked Marty about the phony Hubbard military history or the chain-locker incidents on-board the Apollo or etc.

If she had, Marty probably would have walked out in a huff

Maybe she could have asked whether an 'End of Cycle' had been ordered for Lisa McPherson and that was why her 'baby watchers' received no orders.

What I have learned from this is the amount of money that Scn. has in its war chest.

Whatever was paid to France is chump change. Scn has a billion in the war chest, Rathbun said. This may explain why Clinton was asking Germany to ease off on Scientology attacks and why the US embassy intervened in the defence of Scn. There must be much lobby and funds contributed to political campaigns, so the favors are called in. Then if this is correct, it can play against itself. The christian religious right gets wind of the politician siding with the cult, it may withdraw its support.

The interview with Marty is pretty much exactly what I'd expect from Marty, I think he did well marketing and representing himself ... but it is all about how good Marty and Hubbard are and how evil Miscavige is after all, so I didn't expect anything else.

What struck me as odd was the person who was interviewed after Marty, The Director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion Gordon Melton, he was fairly knowledgeable and accurate in his responses regarding Scientology, however he acted as if he does not realize that Scientology;s critics are far different that critics from other religions and movement, he acted as if he doesn't know that the vast majority of Scientology's critics were once Sea Org Members, Staff Members, and longtime Scientologists.

His assessment about Scientology "weathering the storm" is flawed since Scientology is producing more ex-Scientolgoists every day which are becoming critics, this is not a storm, it is a longterm trend which will not end since a cult like Scientology can not exist in an open society.

He acted as if the cult's only problem regarding the internet was cyber attacks on their websites, that is so far from reality it is laughable.

The cult's major problem is not 14 year old hackers , it's the truth about Hubbard an Scientology now being readily available to anyone who is interested in reading about it, listening to it, or viewing it.

I didn't see it this way. As far as I'm concerned, this guy came across like he hadn't done his homework, and/or he was getting some kinda kick back from the CofS. To me, he wasn't accurate in his responses, and he contradicted himself.

If anything, I think that this guy did the 'critic's movement' a favour........after listening to this guy's responses to the questions, most "outsiders" would be left thinking "wtf? ".

I thought he explained the pay to pray structure of the cult and it's beliefs being confidential as best he could without offending Scientologists and turning off people sympathetic to Scientology, which is not an easy task considering Scientology is nothing but a con game. I was also wondering if he was paid by the cult, but I think he's just more concerned with not have to spend money fighting their frivolous lawsuits, and simply not critical of cults in general.

I do agree with him doing the 'critic's movement' a favor, since anyone who is interested in the Mystery Sandwich which he carefully avoided discussing can simply Google 'Scientology' and they will find it and then some.
