Default Professor Dave Touretzky: Scientology Condensed into 5 Easy Steps

Reposted from Tony Ortega's Village Voice post "Scientology, Cooked: Commenters of the Week!"
( I messed with the original formatting and made the sub-section titles bold; the text is unchanged)

"Professor Dave Touretzky piped up with a very clever shorthand for how a career in Scientology goes..."

    2. Dianetics: you need therapy for all the bad things that happened to you in life, starting at conception.

    3. Scientology: you're an immortal spiritual being, and you need therapy for all the bad things that happened in all your previous lives, too. Higher rates apply.

    4. Operating Thetan levels 3-7: you're possessed by the spirits of murdered space aliens called "body thetans", and they need therapy too. Bad news: they have no money, so YOU have to pay. Secrecy and higher rates apply; magical powers are promised if you persevere.

    5. Suppressive person declare: you realize you've been scammed. You have no magical powers, no one else does either, and it's time to close your checkbook and get the hell out.

I've used this formulation in a bunch of radio interviews. It's very effective.

Here's a video clip of an appearance by Dave Touretzky on TV back in 2007.

Glenn Beck was interviewing him and seemed to believe it was a fine idea to use Scientology in public schools.

    Bump!

Yes, you can fly, but first you have to break out of that cocoon. You are capable of self rescue at all times. "Every blade of grass has its own special angel watching over it and whispering, 'grow...grow'." -The Talmud "I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be, for I have learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our disposition, and not upon our circumstances." -Martha Washington

    REVISED-1

I was in the cult and on staff for 10 years... here are the stages I have seen... as one exits the 'Hubbardian' mind control program....

    1) There is something wrong here, if this is so great, then
    why is (______) going on?

[ insert whatever atrocity you have recently witnessed ]

    2) The guys at the top must be crazy

    3) Miscavige and crew are evil demons from another dimension
    [ or something similar ]

    4) Hubbard went crazy at the end .....

    5) Hubbard went crazy in 1966

    6) Hubbard was mad from the start.

    7) This whole thing is a complete fraud

    8) my god, its a criminal organization... with criminal convictions
all over the world... and it was only about money

    9) realization that THERE ARE NO OT's THERE!

    10) realizing, after leaving Scientology, this makes one an ex-nazi and wanting to do something about it

I went through ALL these stages, although I'm not sure that it was in that exact order. I believe I am at #11 or #12 on that scale now. Sorry, they are confidential levels, I can't say what they are.
