    Default Travolta donates jet

..WARNER ROBINS, Ga. (AP) — Actor John Travolta plans to donate a jet plane to a museum in central Georgia.

Robins Air Force Base spokeswoman Chrissy Miner says the actor will donate a G-2 Gulfstream executive jet to the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame at the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins.

Museum officials say Travolta, who is a pilot, is donating the plane in honor of his son Jett, who died in 2009.

Miner tells the Telegraph newspaper in Macon (http://bit.ly/KYnzY) the plane is now in central Georgia. Plans call for the jet to be used as a display for an upcoming air show planned for April.

It's a museum of military aviation. If they're going to display it, I'd imagine they'll convert it to look like one of the military variants of the G2. I doubt they'd simply display a rather ordinary aircraft simply on the basis that it previously belonged to a faded movie actor. (What he "plans" and what happens might be different.)

"Miner tells the Telegraph newspaper in Macon the plane is now in central Georgia." ... translation: the 'plane is immobile. It goes here, or it goes to the breakers.

I'm sure that making expensive donations is a deeply-ingrained habit for Travolta by now, as it is for all long-term Scientology victims. I'm not sure this one quite hits the mark, however.

Okay, is it just me that finds it ironic that Travolta's Gulfstream is the SP variant? (SP denotes a 'Two' with those cute little winglets retrofitted.)

Maybe he was ordered to disconnect from it.

Why would anyone want an old bunch of scrap airplane? It is an ugly and uninspiring gift.

I have an old station wagon parked at my families farm, needs an engine and some panels and a roadworthiness certificate. I wonder if I will get a tax write down if I donate it?

Not sure of the tax allowances, but they would be based on the fair market value of the vehicle. Some old vehicles have a negative fair market value, in that you couldn't even find a scrap dealer to take it away for nothing and would have to pay to get rid of it.

Yes indeed, but it was car owned by me, and that must add value, it could eventuially become a shrine....

If people weren't willing to donate to aviation museums (or many other kinds) there wouldn't be any. Mr. Travolta's donation may not be entirely altruistic, but at least he's doing it. It's sad to see many aircraft just sitting in the weeds because the value is in the engines and avionics. When the engines come to need an overhaul, the owners just walk away. The airframes alone aren't worth much.
