Scientology literally saved my life! Without Ron's books I would have frozen to death!!! (see avatar)
Scientology in one word? HelluvaHoax!
I never felt as free as when I freed myself from "Total Freedom".
For offended Scientologists reading this blasphemy about L. Ron Hubbard---my apologies for talking about real life without lying to you, like Scientology, with goo-goo theta-talk. I know you don't have a floating needle right now. You're not supposed to.

There are some really UGLY pictures of LRH on this thread. There was really only one picture of LRH that I liked and that was the one where he was sitting on a boat in a chair with his white hat on and he had his finger pointing at the camera. I don't know how to find that one to put it here and even if I did find it, wouldn't know how to put it here. But, the thing I especially liked about it was all the water and the color blue.
The other thing I wanted to mention about the bust of LRH is that I could never really understand having a bust there. Wasn't it in KSW where he's talking about how silly it is to worship stone idols? Well....... what's the difference there?
Plus, I always wanted to stick my finger up it's nose or in its mouth. I know, I know.....very disrespectful of me and probably evil purps and all that.
Sigh..... oh well.

I can't say I am physically revulsed by him, but I can say this. The first time I saw this photo I thought that this was the photo of someone who has something to HIDE. I thought that was the antithesis of what I expected from scn. And it rattled me that this was the fearless leader, the person that I was supposed to put my full trust in. Thank you for bringing this up, except for the fact that it reminds me of how many things I saw that raised a red flag for me and yet I kept on buying the crap. Oh well, live and learn.

That's a very true statement, and it's not generally considered high character to judge someone by their looks. But, here's the issue here, I think: Have you ever noticed that after time, your perception of someone's looks changes. . . . "beautiful people" can start to look repulsive to you, if you get to know them and they are nasty people, and likewise, some people who weren't blessed with physical beauty become beautiful to you after you know them. . . Mother Theresa may not have been a beauty, but she is considered one of the most beautiful souls on this planet, Abraham Lincoln was beloved because of what he did, and I'm not sure people became physically ill looking at him. You start to perceive what you know of the "inside" of a person in your reaction to them, and it shapes your perception of them as a person.
The fact is, that we all got to know LRH pretty well, through his written and spoken words, through the organization that he created. The thing many of us experienced was that he was even uglier on the inside than he was on the outside, and I'm guessing that's what people are reacting to here.
(That and the fact that he judged others by their looks. . . . just listen to his material on the tone scale sometime, and some of his stuff about aberration. '' I remember being told that he said that women with swollen ankles were 1.1's or 2.0's or some such thing.)
So, I think this thread is about more than his physical characteristics . . . a revulsion this deep is more than skin deep.
Tiger Lily,
if you look at Mother Theresa's actual conduct, rather than the simplified legend, it's clear that she had feet of clay. In fact, more than feet. She was an adroit campaigner; not a scam artist like LRH, but ruthless all the same. She was a servant of the Catholic Church first, and a humanitarian a distant second. In a country where her (admittedly genuine, unlike Scn) faith was a minority one, she could have done more for the populace. Donations that people in the West thought they were making "for the poor" were used for missionary work, and orphans were only placed with Catholic families... so her staff helped less people than they might have.
Like LRH, she had some ideas that don't stack up, when compared with real science. For example, she felt that suffering would bring one closer to Christ... so pain relief medication was often withheld. As in the Scientology pseudoreligion, growth was felt to be all-important, and it has been reported that she would baptise dying non-Christians, in secret and against the wishes of their relatives. Also, like Scientology, great emphasis was placed upon obedience to one's superiors; initiative was a thing to be stamped out... and proper medical training was deemed unnecessary. Divine guidance would suffice!
Of course, one major difference between the Scientology scam and the Catholic religion lies in their attitude to abortion... but we all know about the Sea Org.
The world will be a better place when people stop thinking of the populace as mere counters in some cosmic game, where for some reason 'winning' requires you to export and expand your faith to new populations of 'wogs'. It seems unrealistic to hope for better, kinder, more rational religious leaders... so I'll hope for a smarter, more empowered populace instead.
Sorry for the derail. Let's get back to talking about a ridiculous ginger tub of lard who thought he was some kind of photographer/ messiah/ musician/ writer/ scientist/ aviator/ womaniser/ admiral... and who was tormented by his own failings.
