That is another of the many contradictions of the subject and practices of Scientology.
Hubbard talks on and on about suppressive people, PTSness, the anti-social pesonality, and the always existent "merchant of chaos". Of course, he creates the view that they all exist "over there", far from Scientology, and that Hubbard himself and Scientology are the comlete antithesis of the "merchants of chaos".
But then involvement with organized Scientology, a version of Scientology that closely adheres to and applies the entire extant pattern of what Scientology is "supposed to be" based all extant LRH writings and lectures, places any Scientology participant in a VERY oppressive, ultra-controlling, intolerant and overwhelming environment (Scientology itself). One can't help but exist under suppression when involved with the "Church" of Scientology.
Scientology, where the contradictions never end.

"They must know how to kindle and fan an extravagent hope". - Eric Hoffer about the "true believer". "Total Freedom", "your eternity", and "OT" involve a few of the extravagant hopes in Scientology.

Scientology in one word? HelluvaHoax!
I never felt as free as when I freed myself from "Total Freedom".
For offended Scientologists reading this blasphemy about L. Ron Hubbard---my apologies for talking about real life without lying to you, like Scientology, with goo-goo theta-talk. I know you don't have a floating needle right now. You're not supposed to.

The truth about the solving of the OTIII problem, is that everyone other than the mighty LRH who tried to solve it perished.
Without exception, anyone who tried to solve OTIII fell off their motorbike, got busted up a bit and took a lot of pinks and greys, rum, and other stuff. Only LRH had the supply of drugs and booze neccessary to complete the work, and a bunch of little girs to fawn over him, while he screamed and shouted like a little baby for weeks.
What research! What a hero! Enough of the doubt!

Yep, and they USE the idea of "evil merchants of chaos", and FEAR of an eternal future of "suppression and chaos" to extract the money.
It is the same old "doom and gloom" scenario (similar to the "Hell" of Christianity), where the FEAR of such a horrible future is used carefully and exactly to control behavior (participation, paying money, contributing time and energy, etc.). Scientology is basically a very well thought out "behavioral control" system. Of course, the MIND control (severe indoctrination into the Scientology paradigm of ideas) precedes the behavioral manipulation.
