I have to add that there are plenty of people around who have never been anywhere near Scientology, probably couldn't spell it, who have also had divorces, messy break-ups, business failures, bankruptcies, serious illnesses and general life wreckage. As the Buddhists say, shit happens.
I think the issue is that Scientology tries to make people believe they can avoid those things. And if they do, it's because of Scientology rather than through pure luck and random events. And if they don't, it's because of them -- they must have done something wrong.
Reminds me a bit of a boss I once had (outside of Scientology). If the income went down, it was because of something I didn't do. But if it went up, it wasn't because of me.
