There is good and bad everywhere - and I am sure there are people here who could give horror stories about religion and churches outside scno/co$. I won't.
What I will say is this: When I was at the lowest point in my entire life, and cut off from family and friends, and bereft beyond words, when I could not even reach out to anyone, and was considering ending it, there were Christians who reached out to me because they saw I was in need. They did not try to convert me, and they did not preach to me. They invited me to their kids plays and school fairs, they invited me to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. They never pried or tried to investigate what was going on. They included me in their lives, and gave me comfort and belonging - without expectation. They never insisted I go to their church, or any church. They just saw a Soul in need of comfort and unconditional love, and they gave it, just as Christ would have - to a lost Soul - without any expectations.
It permanently changed the image and impression I had had of Christains and Christian churches . . . And later, so touched by this, I found my own way to Christ - in another town, my life recovering from devastation.
Lead by example. And practice what you preach.
