It's true. I think it's more like that when they're doing a course than when they're getting auditing. Priscilla did KTL at AOLA; I think she was on Solo I and II there too.
I don't know why when they are getting auditing that someone goes to their house. It may be if their auditing cycle has some kind of uplines attention that happens. I'm sure that was true with Kirsty's 2D co-audit. That whole thing was very "flappy" from what I recall.
Another Aussie! Welcome!
It's true, Tom's reputation here is mud. Aussies love "our Nic".
Tom was actually in Scn way before Nicole. He was gotton in by his first wife, Mimi Rogers. That relationship was not pleasing to the Scio gods of the dwarf variety, and the marriage was quickly and quietly deep sixed while Tom was romancing Nicole on the set of Days of Thunder. He drifted away from Scn while married to Nicole and was brought back to the fold in the latter years. Nicole was not sufficiently indoctrinated and held onto her own beliefs. I believe Tom was ordered to divorce her.

I wonder, too. My guess- uninformed as it probably is- is that Katie had the schoolgirl crush on TC, married him, and didn't really realize she was marrying into a cult. The signs were there but it's one thing to have those clues and another to really live in a situation and hindsight's 20/20 anyway.
I think she saw how invasive it was- after having those minders and all that, how could she not- and also that Tom was getting more and more fanatical (I believe he's been fervent for many years, but from what a former insider told a friend of mine, I think he used to be more level headed about it.) and finally she hit the wall, the last straw was placed.
It had to be incredibly creepy to have DM hanging around and even going on their honeymoon with them. No way could she have bargained for that or liked it. Even if DM weren't so fucking weird (and he is)- even having the nicest charmingest friend go with you on your wedding trip would antagonize most spouses. And DM is anything but nice, charming or normal, though I'm sure he can dial up some fairly decent social manners when he has to.
Katie probably would have known about Tom threatening to help DM beat staff. She may even have seen some of the Sea Org slavery to which Tom used to his advantage. I know the cult tries to keep a lot of that under wraps- but the thing is, if you've got someone who accepts those things as his due then eventually it would be pretty conspicuous and not hidden, which means the spouse would be fully exposed to it or at least seen some very blatant signs.
You'd have to be pretty conditioned to accept slavery. It's one thing to be a Scn'ist and do the daily juggling/rationalization/mental gymnastics they have to do. It's entirely another to be witnessing that stuff while not being a Scn'ist.
That's probably why TC tries to convert these women he marries and dates. Let's assume that he really loved Katie, really loved Nicole, really loved Penelope- at some point in their relationships. It's possible. And Tony Ortega says he's very sure that TC is hetero. My personal guess is maybe about 2 to 2.5 on the Kinsey Scale...but anyway, it would be like any fundie- they don't do so well with what they call "mixed marriages" (by "mixed marriage"- I am not referring to interracial relationships. It's a term that Catholics used to and maybe still do use a lot to mean interfaith.). They really really don't. It's threatening to their peace of mind and causes lots of problems when they have children- as we've seen with Suri.

I mean, can you believe that?? An organization that doesnt even allow a father to see his own daughter because they're no longer with Scientology.'If Tom was any other Scientologist, including lesser celebrities, he would not be allowed to continue seeing and maintaining communication with Katie or Suri, because they are no longer in Scientology.'
Unbelievable!!
