There are many possible takes on this, I realize. I wonder how Hubbard got away with all he got away with for so long. He attempted the take over of 3 countries (at least) Rhodesia, Greece, Libya through infiltration. His organization perpetrated the largest break in and infiltration of the US Govt ever (at that time).
And he was playing the gold markets in the late 70's. Even Lyndon LaRouche spent time in jail. Was Scientology just a huge "black op"? Given that the FBI had infiltrated just about every other "social change" group in the 60's and '70's (Black Panthers, MLK, etc) the magnitude of "slack" given to Hubbard and his "group" is just staggering. As others have alluded to here and there, this *might* explain why the CoS is now being thrown "under the bus". With black box surveillance possible via Level 1 Internet companies (and AT&T has always been a govt "playa") perhaps there is less of a need for the "confessional data".

I know, I gotta stop reading the internet. Just wondered what your take on this is.

    Div6,

I crossed paths with Jimmy Mulligan and Anne Burgess briefly in the mid '80's a little while after they were "Out" of the GO. In the interests of my anonymity I'm not going to discuss the circumstances or whereabouts, although I will say it was not where they were living. I have not been in contact with them since and have no clue where they are today, where their "heads" are at or if they are still together.

I ipersonally nteracted with both Jimmy and Anne a few times during my SO career. I think the idea that Mulligan was a government "Plant", "Stooge", "Operative" or whatever is bogus. The US Gubmint may well have surveilled Scn then and attempted infiltration...I dunno...your guess is as good as mine. I, personally, very seriously doubt that Jimmy, or Anne, were GMen that penetrated the Inner Circle. Getting invited and allowed in and surviving there for even a short period of time was not easy, would be complex to set up the "stage" for and rest heavily on a matter of random luck. Even if an FBI Spook managed to navigate all that, due to the compartmentalization, many posts were surprisingly "in the dark' about all of what was going on and would have to depend on the "Skinny Line" for any valuable meat and potatoes.

Now, I guess someone could try to make the "Case" that Jimmy "turned" or was "turned" but, based upon my interaction with him pre and post his USGO tenure and the lack of any actual evidence or credible narratives I don't buy that one iota. If Mulligan had "turned" or was an "inside man" for the Gubmint the FBI and the IRS woulda had everything they needed to do a successful "Capone Case" on El Ron, well before Hisself departed to do Upper Level Research without the emcumbrance of humanoid flesh.

That's my take on it FWIW and, quoting Forrest Gump, "That's all I have to say 'bout that."

In 2005, the director of the Narconon-Hastings (St. Leonards) in the UK was Jim Mulligan. I don't know if this is the same Rev. Jimmy C. Mulligan.

Jimmy worked with Fred Hare in the GO. Fred's on Facebook.

There's a Jimmy C. Mulligan, age 82, living in the San Diego area.

The Social Security Death Index shows an 'Anne B. Burgess', dying in Clearwater, FL. in 1996.

The Dennis Ehrlich version of what happened to Quentin (complete with unknowns) is exactly the same story I heard as a rank public hanging around Big Blue. Surprisingly, that version was a widely shared secret.

I heard even more gossipy details about the condition Quentin was found in, but won't repeat them. Back then, Scio gossip was shared the old fashioned way -- among trusted friends, over coffee, in dark bars and in parked cars. But weirdly, I can't remember now who told me.

My recollection is that "everyone felt terrible" for Quentin. His gayness was an open secret, even among public who'd never met him. And his death was a huge (forgive the expression) "mystery sandwich." The considered possibilities ran the gamut and included generic suicide, death by SO/LRH for some awful crimes, murder by LRH-haters, bad sex gone horribly bad, poisoning, mafioso, cops, hookers -- in Vegas it could've been anything, mysterious substances found in his body, etc. The abiding impression we all had was he'd been murdered.

Was an awful thing to happen.

Man, it's staggering to look back and realize what a dumb clam I was 35 years ago and how unwilling I was to question authority -- out loud. Anybody can WONDER if something's not right. But until you say something or do something after you have those thoughts -- even if all you do is slip out the back door -- you're just a dumb clam.
