Religion News Blog: Dutch Scientology front group loses charity status

Local newspaper Het Parool reports that the Nabesa foundation, one of the cult’s front groups, has lost its status as a public benefit organization.

Earlier this year the paper reported that Scientologists were using loopholes to accept tax-deductable for a so-called ‘Ideal Org.’

The Church of Scientology Amsterdam itself is not considered a charity or public benefit organization, and therefore donations made directly to the cult are not tax deductible.

Nevertheless, citing church documents it has seen, Het Parool said the Scientology Church Amsterdam sees the Netherlands as a tax paradise and is wildly enthusiastic about it.

In an internal letter the organization encouraged Scientologists to donate money not to the church directly, but rather to NaBeSa (an abbreviation for ‘To a Better Society), a foundation that had non-profit status.

The repeal of the so-called ANBI status will have major financial consequences for Scientology.

There have been a few positive developments in the Netherlands lately, which I felt would be worthwhile to post over here as well.

Firstly, the Dutch tax exemption for Scientology was revoked last week.

A little background. Between 1996 and 2004 Scientology litigated to obtain tax exemption. They did not succeed, because they failed to pass the public benefit test. Their next move was to create a fake foundation, Nabesa (surprise, huh?). They succeeded in obtaining tax exeption for this foundation, which is supposed to promote Hubbard or something like that.

Last Febuary I obtained evidence that the CoS was abusing this tax exemption to solicit donations for the Dutch Ideal Org. This lead to some modest press attention and parliamentary questions, which were answered in a very bland way a few months later (but that´s how the game is played). Luckily the tax office did take action after all and they removed the tax exemption last week!

The ANBI register for tax exempt organisations still included Nabesa on July 3rd (Google cache so page will eventually disappear): http://webcache.googleusercontent.c....p=&Submit=Zoek &cd=4&hl=nl&ct=clnk&gl=nl. However, as of last week the search result comes up empty: http://213.197.219.132/anbi_zoeken_l...p=&Submit=Zoek.

Also, the Nabesa website changed from http://scamofscientology.nl/img/nabesa.jpg to http://nabesa.nl/, providing further evidence that their tax free status has been yanked.

So yay for government officials doing their job!

Secondly, the Dutch CoS primary school closed down: http://www.lafayette-school.nl/nieuws.html. They are attempting to reopen a school in Amsterdam (http://debrugkrant.nl/nieuwe-kleinsc...mst-op-ijburg/), but it is unclear how succesfull this attempt is.

Thirdly, the Healthcare inspection opened an investigation into Narconon. The confirmation is here: http://scamofscientology.nl/img/NarcononIgZ.jpg. I have asked David to act as contact person (since I prefer not to get namefagged) and he is working on sending some more dox to the good people at the Health Inspection.
