I looked up Laurie's dad. Whoa. Quite a character. He passed away in 2010 in his early 90s, and one of his last vids shows him smoking, and still very much a believer in his own version of the galactic truth. He led the sort of life that LRH only pretended to live, and seems like his message was based in kindness and good vibes rather than the fear and control that was the continual undercurrent of Scientology. Some of his old group have their own sort of version of ESMB, but without the regrets and horror stories. Mostly nostaligia and serenity.

Interesting about Dave's sojourn out of the SO. His Dad's Palo Alto real estate should have brought Dave enough to live a comfortable retirement and send his daughter to college. I hope he wakes up before he blows it all on the bridge to nowhere.

I don't know if I will try to reconnect with him. I'm probably not the best person for that. But maybe someone else will see this...
    A. It isn't Palo Alto, it is Pennsylvania. My guess is that it is all gone by now. Dave, once, sailed his boat down to LRH, and gave it to him. LRH awarded him some kind of honor, don't remember what now. He's a true believer. i'm sorry to say.

Would you mind posting links to Laurie's dad's stuff? He was a sign painter like billboards back long ago before he got "the call." I remember meeting him. He was nice, not a BS artist, and not a creep. Just marching to a different drummer.

Oh, there's a short video documentary on the gallactic messenger website you might enjoy if you haven't already seen it. A brief shot of a group photo on the front porch, you'd probably enjoy.
    please put up the URL.

Steve was part of the SoCal folk scene in the 60s. Jackson Browne wrote at least one of the songs on his album.

Rambling Jack Elliot stayed with Steve and his wife, Barbara at their house on Hunolt (spelling?) Street in Santa Cruz back in the 70s. Jack hit on her.

Back in 68-69, 75-76, and another time, she (Barbara) was my girl friend. I met Laurie at their (Steve and Barbara's) house on Douglass St. near Elyssian Park in LA before their wedding. Shortly after, Laurie, moved north to live with me, and get involved with a certain religious cult.

Re: Dave's dad's house. I see. I am so West Coast-centric, it never occurred to me that PA could refer to the state of Pennsylvania, or anything else other than Palo Alto. Big difference in real estate markets!

Re: Laurie's dad, Allen Noonan (aka "Michael") there's really quite a bit about him on the net. He was very active and seems like he had a lot of influence. Here's a few that I read:

    wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO_religion
scroll down to Industrial Church of the New World Comforter

Interestingly, this wiki page also includes Scientology in the genre of UFO religions.

It occurrs to me that if Laurie had stuck with her dad's group her life would have been much richer in every way.

Here's the memory-lane type of website about Allen and his peeps, Galactic Messenger Network:

    http://galacticmessenger.com/gmn/

To see some old videos of him talking, and people you might remember, go to
Media Center then Video Archives, then scroll down to the one entitled "documentaries and more"

2:34 shows Allen talking just a few years ago in his 90s
7:15 is the group pic on the porch

    Enjoy!

    About Steve, here's his website:

    http://www.stevenoonan.com/

It looks like there's another Steve Noonan musician who seems kind of folk rocky, but younger.

I've never heard Ramblin Jack play live, but always liked his songs, and saw a docu-movie about him. Not surprised about his pick-up attempt. After all, he did write Gentle on my Mind, which must be the most romantic song ever about the love em and leave em life style.

So I'm guessing Laurie must have joined the SO very soon after she got involved with Scientology? Did you also join SO?

Good links. WOW!! Really Cool! Thank you.

Gentle on My Mind is by John Hartford, someone Geoff Levin, also from the Santa Clara center, used to play with.

If I remember correctly, Laurie moved from her mom's house in Fullerton, to be with me in Nor Cal around Oct of 1969. We were together when we went to Altamont in Dec of 1969. A bunch of us from Scientology Santa Clara went in a van (that we stuffed) (Cindy Karp, Lynn Beckstrom, Jack Dirhman, Dan Woodruff, among others). We got there the night before, and followed (literally) Keith Richards in. We had great seats on the grass.

somewhere around then Laurie and I, independently, joined staff. We were both on the HSDC.

Laurie took to Scientology, like a duck to water. When she was a kid, she used to ride exterior to the school bus and her body, going to and coming from school.

By 1971, we had both left Santa Clara - she for the Sea Org and I for Menlo Park. I never got around to joining the Sea Org. She and a guy, named Dale joined it together. There was always something more important for me to do than the SO -- like giving my dog a bath.
