    Default Man the Unfathomable

Div 6 intro services in the 80's were limited to OCA's, Stress Tests, and Films.
The successful action of live lectures in the 70's had been supplanted by film.

There were only a few films available at the time: one from the 70's that I forget the name of, The Problems of Life (which was one of the first out of Gold, and REALLY sucked). A bit later the Hitchman interview was "re-edited" with a scary blue cast to the entire film. These would be shown for free to new people as an introductory service in Div 6.

Then Gold released "Man the UnFathomable". This film was a major step forward in production values and visual quality. We still did not get many people signing up from seeing it, but at least it wasnt as embarassing as "The Problems of Life".

IN my org we had a Director of Promo, and we created a "film ticket" that could be printed on the back of the cards that were used at the time as tickets on the local subway. The beauty of this was that we could buy a "run" of advertising on the back of peoples metro cards, and select which subway stations the cards would be dispersed at. I forget how many we did on the initial run, but we did find that some people would walk in with their subway card to see the film.

Well.....the Flag Rep sent a metro card uplines as evidence of compliance to the "routes into the org" mult telex, and the next thing I know we are getting orders to increase the amount of the print runs and to have the cards placed in the metro stations closest to the local IRS buildings. Apparently this idea was a "hit" uplines, and the orders were to expand it as much as possible.

Unfortunately, the local subway system abandoned the ad placement idea shortly thereafter. But for a brief time, "Man the Unfathomable" tickets were in the hands of most IRS employees that used the subway in our area. This was considered "Win".

I don't know if this story ever made it back up to the guys at Gold, but I just wanted to say that there were some of us that did appreciate some of the products that were produced at that time.

All of these films were supplanted by the "Orientation Film", which is the ONLY intro film shown in Div 6. I do not know of a SINGLE sign up off of someone just watching that film alone. It is indicative of DM's mentality.

    Or lack there of.

My favorite film was "The Case He Couldn't Crack". Anyone remember that one? It starred David Mayo, so was shelved shortly after it came out. Was at least as hokey as "Problems of Life".

Yes, but that was not a film to show "raw public". But that film had some 'classic' scenes that really should go into a "best of" reel.....the scene in Flag Qual going over the Rules of Listing and Nulling, and of course, the part where the old lady walks again.....

Ah yes, I remember that. The "official" version of Verbal Tech, where it is OK to quote tech off the top of your head as long as you state the HCOB it came from by date and name.

I saw raw public walking out when it got to the bit where the film recommends buying a whole armful of books.

But the bit that really sent the public running was the line: "You could go jump off a bridge..."
