Default Suri Cruise - what is she drinking

Hi All,

I notice whenever you see photo's of Suri Cruise she is drinking a bottle, but the bottle never has milk in it. It seems to have milky liquid in a bag inside the bottle.

I have never seen it before - is this a scientology nutrition thing or is it totally unrelated?

It is probably Hubbard's "Roman Soldier" formula.

We gave it to our son when in the ~SO.

I forget the constituents, except we had to boil barley, strain it and use the liquid. The other part was a heavy glucose type syrup, I forget what it was called.

Didn't do him any harm.

He also wore a clove of garlic around his neck when he went to bed, "to keep bad spirits away" (joke).

Maybe DOF has the info, he has an extensive data bank.

Yep barley formula. Barley water (made from scratch) Karo corn syrup and a dash of cows milk.
It rotted my babies teeth and luckily they all went onto solids early enough to get enough protein.

Next, we have a report of scurvy (yes, scurvy) in a two year-old girl whose parents fed her a mixture of boiled organic milk, barley, and corn syrup -- no fruits or vegetables from which she could have obtained the vitamin C needed to stave off the disease. The Church of Scientology reportedly prescribed the diet.
American Council of Science and Health : Parental Ignorance Can Hurt

There's a response from John Carmichael.. Apparently he smelled some Barley Formula that was maybe getting a bit old..

From memory, the barley formula was two thirds barley water, to one third homogenised milk, with some caro syrup (or honey to taste). LRH's instructions were to supplement the barley, with freshly sqeezed orange juice (which we dilluted with water) and, a teaspoon of cod liver oil a day.

We ran it by a homeopath and naturopath. Both advised that if we were prepared to go to the effort, that the barley was a high source of protein and other nutrients, and that coupled with the juice and cod liver oil, it would be a great balanced diet for baby.

I thought the cod liver oil was a shocker (yuk!). Suprizingly though, with the first teaspoon (given to each baby), there was no adverse affect si it wasn't a problem.

Our babies did well on it - ie: slept through, no illness, and no fillings in either baby teeth or adult teeth.

Against LRH's opinion, where he suggested it was maybe a waste of effort to breast feed (busy mum's, not enough milk etc), our kids were breast fed for a couple of months at least fulltime, then both breast milk and barley till 6-8 months.

We were thankful for the barley formula - we never liked the idea of our babies or toddlers having processed/refined foods being a large part of their diet.

My youngest id a combination of breast and barley. She turned out fine. Well, physically she's perfect. I don't suppose you can blame the barley formula for her attitude...............................

I posted this broadly last year. Currently the only available data on the Barley formula is this HCOB in the red volumes. It stresses that one should NOT
add vitamins. However in the now deleted second dynamic book this is revised, see below.

Our son was not able to get enough breast milk, so we had to supplement. At that time there was a scandal with baby formula in the UK. Many
contained too much aluminium, but the UK government would not say
which ones. So we supplemented with Barley water and that worked out very well. With the addition of vits etc. Our son was not allowed sweets when young. To this day at 19 years old he has never needed a filling. The next post will detail a report of scurvy created by the use of Barley formula without supplements.

----------------
TECH outside COS: BARLEY FORMULA.URGENT! Additional Data.

Its a danger to babies. The COS needs to make very broad public issue
of this matter. The Second Dynamic book has been withdrawn, leaving
this reference in place. Please see the issues below which were in the
now withdrawn " Second Dynamic Book".

>From new red vols HCOB 28 april 1991 BARLEY FORMULA FOR BABIES

" ...honey may be used instead of corn syrup...."

" Do not add anything else to this formula, such as vitamins or
cream....."

LRH Barley Formula Additional Data
FLAG INFORMATION LETTER 355
21 April 1980

The original formula was supplemented with freshly squeezed orange
juice and cod liver oil. It has been found that this data was not
known and people using the formula were not doing this.

A supplement has been verified as needed, as an analysis of the
formula shows that it is lower than the Recommended Daily Allowance
for infants in vitamins A, C, and iron.

Therefore, infants on the barley formula should be given 4 to 8 ounces
of freshly squeezed orange juice ( or a Vitamin C supplement should
any baby have an allergic reaction to orange juice) and one half
teaspoon of cod liver oil per day. Per Adelle Davis in her book "Let's
Have Healthy Children" (pages 66-69, 176-177), brewers yeast
(Tortula)* and eggs can be used to obtain the needed iron. She also
noted that iron salts recommended by some pediatricians destroy
vitamin E, can cause anemia and if taken in large doses can be fatal.
Therefore, these should probably be avoided. She also notes that
newborns can store iron up to six months, so the need for an iron
supplement should be verified as needed. This can be done by a simple
test at the pediatrician's. For further information, "Let's Have
Healthy Children" is a signet book, published by New American Library,
Inc., 1301 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York, 10019.

Per LRH Founder advices nothing should be added to the formula itself.
So the supplement should be given to babies seperately, not as part of
a formula bottle. This can be done in a juice bottle once a day, or by
supplying a vitamin supplement available for infants. Liason on
dosages should occur with the child's pediatrician.

*In Flag Order 3593, 1 August 1975, Mary Sue writes "...a vitamin B
complex deficiency (can be) remedied by taking a natural food high in
B complex - primary (not torula) brewers' yeast....."

HONEY

FlAG INFORMATION LETTER 211
27 July 1978
(written by the Flag Medical Officer)

Information issued in the Washington Post recently concerning the use
of honey for infants under one year old should be known by parents and
those responsible for infant care so it can be applied and honey not
given to these babies.

"The world's largest honey producing group yesterday warned that there
may be a risk of botulism if honey is fed in infants under a year
old".

The statement by the Sioux Honey Association of Sioux City, Iowa, said
recent research has shown that some honey may contain botulism spores.

Under certain conditions, such spores can produce the poison that
causes
sometimes deadly botulism infection. Other new research has shown that
botulism has caused some cases of "crib deaths" -- deaths in their
sleep of apparently healthy infants...

The cooperative honey-producing association said that recent findings
about honey cast no suspicion at all on honey as a food for older
children or adults.

The association also said there is exactly the same "possibility of a
risk factor" in feeding "any raw agricultural product" to infants...

Scientists agree that botulism spores may be found in soils and dust
all over the world. Such soils are found on many fruits and
vegetables . The spores are diluted but not removed by washing, so in
fact, people eat such spores without harm all the time.

They ordinarily effect human beings only when processed foods are
inadequately heated in a canning or bottling process, or improperly
fermented. Then the botulism spores can produce the toxin that often
results in death.

No infant botulism has been found in anyone over 26 years old.

Since under some circumstances honey can contain spores which can
effect susceptible infants, and since we don't know yet which infants
are susceptible, it would seem prudent to avoid exposing one's baby to
a known source."

SO, parents and nannies take heed and do not give honey to infants
under 1 year of age, and note the warning about raw agricultural
products which would also not be advised for infants.

Burk CJ, Molodow R.
Infantile scurvy: an old diagnosis revisited with a modern dietary twist.
American Journal of Clinical Dermatology,
volume 8, issue 2, 2007, pages 103-106.

>Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is necessary for the formation of collagen,
>reducing free radicals, and aiding in iron absorption. Scurvy, a
>disease of dietary ascorbic acid deficiency, is uncommon today.
>Indeed, implementation of dietary recommendations largely eradicated
>infantile scurvy in the US in the early 1900s.We present a case of an
>otherwise healthy 2-year-old Caucasian girl who presented with refusal
>to walk secondary to pain in her lower extremities, generalized
>irritability, sleep disturbance, and malaise.

>The girl's parents described feeding the patient an organic diet
>recommended by the *Church of Scientology* that included a boiled
>mixture of organic whole milk, barley, and corn syrup devoid of fruits

>Physical examination revealed pale, bloated skin with edematous,
>violaceous gums and loosening of a few of her teeth. Dermatologic
>findings included xerosis, multiple scattered ecchymoses of the

>radiographic evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of scurvy. The patient
>showed dramatic improvement after only 3 days of treatment with oral
>ascorbic acid and significant dietary modification. In this case

What you posted above is the abstract; it's available in PubMed. The
full paper might be worth a look.

I never used the Barley Formula with my kids because I breast fed them only until 4-6 months. However, I have grandkids that I have made it for. I squirreled it though. Honey or corn syrup or regular milk are a no no for little ones in my estimation. I used brown rice syrup (the body digests this differently than sugar), almond milk and the barley solution. They liked it, it still has the basic idea and it worked when their moms were not available.

my 2 cents,

My kids were older when I became involved in Scn, (I came in the Dn route, first) so luckily they never had the Barley stuff. Heard it has rotted teeth and caused some health issues.

They were both breastfed for the first couple months, then onto forumula, and they were rarely ever ill, both slept thru the entire night from day one (so much so, it scared me sometimes!).
