    Earlier this week I received the following e-mail;

    Mr. Dickman:

    I am an attorney in Salt Lake City who has a lawsuit against Carl Barney. I was sent the biography of your time in the Church of Scientology, which mentions Carl Barney’s ownership of several Scientology-related enterprises. I was wondering whether you would be willing to share what you know about Mr. Barney from that period of time.

    Yours,
    Brandon

    I was hesitant to respond to the e-mail and instead looked Mr. Mark up on the internet and left a message on his answering machine. This morning he and I spoke. He is involved with the following lawsuit;

    https://consumerist.com/2016/08/31/...r-sues-feds-after-non-profit-status-rejected/

    I had no knowledge of Barney's loans during his time with Scientology Coordinated Services (SCS) and was unable to be of much help. Mr. Mark was not opposed to me publicizing his need for people who knew Mr. Barney when he was running the loan operation with SCS.

    If anyone can help him, Mr. Mark can be reached at - BMark@parsonsbehle.com

    Thanks;

    Howard Dickman

    A quick search makes me wonder if it's the same Carl Barney? Could be more than one person by that name.

    Edit: I did find this quote from an article....

    "He toured India, and later ended up in California — dabbling briefly, he admits with some embarrassment, in Scientology — seeking meaning here and there while engaging in the great American tradition of self-improvement."

    Edit again: "Dabbling briefly" and "being a major mission holder" don't seem to describe the same activity.

    Ya, I knew Carl Barney in Melbourne where he was from . . . and he is a person in need of a great deal of "self improvement."

    Way back in the day I " knew of " him & from my trusted friends what I heard about him I made sure my hat was never ever in the same ring - or even building as him.

    Specific details are too long ago for me to dredge up - I just remember I made a point of having no association with that one.

    Gizmo,

    Tantalizing. If you're still in touch with some of those friends perhaps you could ask them what they knew about Carl Barney.

    I'm long since no longer in touch with those that haven't croaked already.

    That’s a detail I missed when I first read your post, namely that Barney was *from* Melbourne. Do you mean he was born and raised there?

    The problem is: Barney himself claims to have been born in England, and left when he was a young man.

    There are two recent videos of Barney on YouTube and I can detect no British accent at all. However he does have a slight Australian accent.

    Ya . . . you are correct. I could have more correctly said, I knew Carl B in Melbourne when I was there on staff and running my business. Where he originated from I do not know . . . Alan used to get ticked off at me for thinking him to be an Australian as he was born in England.

    That's so funny...I thought Alan was Australian for the longest time. LOL
