This is something their PR machine always throws out, along with "unprecedented expansion". If I have made errors, please correct them. I got it started, and it does not look good at all in regard to the cults' claim of Orgs and Missions in ~160 countries.

Have fun and help determine exactly how badly they are lying! I did actually Google every NO shown.

"In" is too vague a word. Scientology claims they are "in" a country if at least one Scientologist went there at some time.

How many countries is Scientology recognized as a religion? I believe the number is 11, although they are on shaky ground in a couple of those.

Out of some 200 countries, that just isn't much.

    Bill

(Of course, we have to admit that, in many countries, Scientology adamantly and vehemently denies that they are a religion. "Oh, no!" they cry, "Nothing religious about us. Just a normal business! Nothing to see here!")

I never fail to be tickled by how few countries Scientology is actually in. And as Bill says, "in" is a slippery words. I'll bet the Scios count a country at the very smallest representation, ie someone once sold a book or handed out a pamphlet.

    From Wikipedia article:
Scientology is legally recognized as a tax-exempt religion in the United States, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Sweden, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain.

    That is only 8 countries.

I believe it may have tax-exempt status in other places for other reasons (educational, social benefit).

I was also under the impression that it had been banned in Greece.

Germany should have a note attached too. Tom couldn't even tread on historical sites there!

Tom Cruise may suit up nicely as an American flying ace or an acrobatic crime buster, but when it comes to portraying Germany's most beloved anti-Nazi, Germans would prefer a different actor, bitte. Cruise is due to play German officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, celebrated for trying to kill Hitler in 1944, but the German Defense Ministry has warned that if Cruise gets the role, Ministry sites will be off-limits to the filmmakers. The reason? Because Cruise, as the Defense Ministry puts it, "has publically professed to being a member of the Scientology cult."

Yet, on the CoS'es own website it says (in an article posted Jan, 2011):

That's a discrepancy of 1000 churches, missions and groups! :omg:

EDIT: I found another yet another CoS website that uses a figure of 6000!

Well there are seemingly about 196 countries in the world, so if Scientology is represented in 167 of these then we really only need to look for the 29 countries which don't have Scientology represented in them. :p

Scientology is banned in Greece but in 2009 (and still in 2010 and perhaps still now) does its thing illegally.

I recently explored much of the cities of Rome, Paris, Madrid and Berlin. I covered tens of miles on foot, train and bus in each city enjoying the people, their cultures and photographing much of the various architectural features and beauty. I never encountered any Scientology presence anywhere in these cities and would have recognized it - were it there to be seen.

They may have building facades (although I never saw them...), but their presence is naught.
