Hah, found a couple of the programs I wrote for CLO EUS. This was the stat evolution program.

o compile as usual: cc evol.c
         copy to /usr/bin: cp a.out /usr/bin/evol.o

o INCLUDES: CASE CHANGE, SOME SPEED INCREASE, QUOTES (SIG/COND),
MORE EFF. SPELL, GOOD BOZO CHECKS, BREAK ON ORG SEARCH, SOME
CLEAN UP, BINARY ORG AND FLAG ASSIGNMENT, TELEX WRITING AND
SENDING (IF PRINTING) WITH INDIVIDUAL TLXNUMBERS.
WDAHWO + WDAHP ?= WDAH HAS BEEN RESTORED AS I THINK I DEBUGGED
THIS AND SHOULD RUN NORMALLY NOW. CABLE STRAIGHTENING IS NOW
IN PLACE ON TEST_FLAG[0] SO IT WILL TAKE A CABLE THAT IS DONE
WITHOUT NEWLINES AND PUT IT STRAIGHT UP AN DOWN AND PROPERLY
PLACE THE STATS THEN PRINT IT PUTS FINAL FILE IN fix.[orgname]
CABLE MUST BE EDITED THOUGH SO DO NORMAL EDITING BEFORE RUNNING
THIS. I DID SOME WORK ON THE SHELL SCRIPT TO REMOVE .tlxnum ONLY
WHEN IT RECOGNIZES THAT THE USER HAS DONE A PROCESS OF A CABLE
THIS SHOULD HELP WITH THE TELEX NUMBERS. IF YOU NEED TO EXIT
USE c OPTION ON MENU AND cat .tlxnum REMEMBER THE NUMBER AND
THEN WHEN YOU ENTER THE EVOL PGM AGAIN JUST USE THE c OPTION
AND echo -n [#] >.tlxnum TO RESTORE THE NUMBERS. [#] IS THE
NUMBER YOU REMEMBERED. ***NOW DOES BETTER SPELL CHECKING FROM
         /usr/stats/cable.spell AND BREAKS WHEN PICKED.
         * SWAPS ON PROMO OUT AND PROMO RATIO WHEN PROMO OUT IS 0.XX.

o NEEDS: INCREASED SPEED, MORE CLEAN UP, AND WORK ON
COOKING MODULE, FIX NEEDED ON TEST_FLAG[1] WHICH SETS 4 FOR SOME
REASON??, possibly done by lowing MAXORGS to 40., * A MINOR BUG
MAY OCCUR IN TELEX NUMBERING IF TWO PEOPLE ARE RUNING THE EVOL.SH
PROGRAM AT THE SAME TIME, IF ONE PERSON LOGS OUT AND THE OTHER IS
RUNNING evol.o PROGRAM THEN THE TELEX NUMBERS WILL START AT [date]610
AGAIN. THIS IS CAUSED BY THE EVOL.SH PROGRAM REMOVING THE .tlxnum
FILE WHEN LOGGING OUT, I HAVENT FIGURED OUT HOW TO REMOVE THE FILE
WHEN DONE OTHERWISE, AND BOTH PEOPLE SHOULD REMAIN LOGGED INTO
EVOL.SH WHEN PROCESSING STATS OR RENUMBER THE TELEXES FROM EXTERNAL
COMM. * STILL WONT DO MULTIPLE FILES BUT WILL DO MULTIPLE TELEXES
IN ONE FILE NO PROBLEM, I NEED TO DO A COMPLETE RE-WRITE TO GET
THIS TO HAPPEN CAN BE DONE IN THE FUTURE BUT REQUIRES A LOT OF
MOVEING IN THE MAIN MODULE, BASICALLY THE WHILE LOOP FROM THE
GETSTAT PORTION OF MAIN() NEEDS TO BE WIDENED TO INCLUDE THE
OTHER STUFF IN MAIN BEFORE EXIT BUT I HAD SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE
FENSES IN A LOWER PORTION WHEN I DID THIS, NEEDS LOOKING INTO.

Geez I had bad spelling back then but good coding ethics.

BTW: I hereby give written permission to absolutely anyone to copy, spread, rewrite, re-engineer, compile, render to executable, transfer et al, make fun of, or otherwise hereto F WITH THIS!

I have about 40 other programs I am thinking of dumping code for also.

Did you have a different program for the missions? I know our stats were a little bit different than the orgs, but were also reported to the CLO.

I designed that to be very malleable to the malfunctions of Scientology and the inherent DEV-T it created on any one or more persons who had to deal with it's intended "busy work." IOW, I set it up to run, but depending on some simple files that could be updated by any one of the CLO monkeys that could handle a text file, they could adjust the text files and it would process whatever they threw at it.

I don't or didn't mean to be condescending to the CLO staff, only a few of them were truely evil, the rest were doing what they were being ordered to or be subjected to the ridiculous "Liability" formula which was nothing but the same outcome.

    oh bother

It had an org file that held the names of an org whether org or mission
It had a spelling file that held the correct spelling of the stat and any potential misspellings after it (there were ton every week on each stat cable that came in).

    Code:
/* The names of the orgs comes from the file: /usr/stats/cable.orgs
     * and has the names of the orgs to search, one on each line
     * and in alphabetical order (very important), and have either a
     * 0 (zero) or a 1 (one) before the name.  0 = day org  1 = fdn org
     * example:
    0AA
    0ATL
    0ATLANTA
    0BSND
    1BSNF
    0BUFF
     * thats all that needs to be done more than 1 version of the orgs name
     * can appear but must be alphabetical to the other name. the limit is
     * set by MAXORGS in the define above.
     */

So if you had a mission, enter it like this:

    0ATLMSN

and it would process it as a day mission

I did set the maximum number of orgs at 40 so I think that means 39 orgs were possible, that was 21 years ago, how many orgs are in the EUS CLO region now?

If I were having trouble with that I would just make a separate file with the overflow of orgs in it and run the first batch, then replace the cable.org file with the other one and run that set. assuming i had absolutely no way of recoding or recompiling the program with new maxorg values.

The stats were kept in another text file (either cable.day or cable.fdn) that held the same thing, the stat and whether it was a regular number like "1" or a float like "1.9" or a character like "y" or "n" or needed looking at as something strange.

    Code:
/* the real stats come from the file: /usr/stats/cable.day or
     *                                     /usr/stats/cable.fdn
     * and have a letter before the name:
     *  i = integer     f = floating point   s = special handling  l = letters
     * these must be put before the stat name but are not necessarily used
     * at this time until cookem () has been finished.
     *  example:

    lORG
    lWE
    iPDC
    iPDCWO
    fCVB
    fGI
    sWDAH
    sWDAHWO
      * something like that and must be in the order that you want the
      * cable to appear when done. the limit on stats is set by MAXSTATS
      * in the define above at the top of the cable.
      */
My program would take whatever future stat was created as long as it was less then the MAXSTATS value I set in the code at 300, how many stats are they running these days?

Again, anyone could do a file swapout and it would suffice as increasing that number.

So, to answer your question, YES, it would deal with any org, org name, stat, misspelled cable or messed up cable structure they sent my way depending on a few files that would have to be updated with a regular text editor (Robert Radsliff could have handled that at least)

The final output of the program was an interpretation of whatever the hell the orgs sent up for a fucked up stat cable each week to the Telex computers in External Comm that Robert Radsliff ran (very well I have to admit and commend him on - though I wonder if they ever figured out how I hacked the 2 passwords needed to get access to it before I left {OSA + INCOMM wanted to know really badly then})

Robert would hand me a disk with the cable on it. (The Telex computers were not networked to the UNIX computer I ran)

I would run the program and call up the file on the disk.

It would distill the crap on the cable and just leave a corrected and structured set of stats in a file.

That file was then taken by Erik Knaurhaus who ran a spreadsheet called "Symphony." He would drag and drop the line of stats to the graphs and it would apply them to the ORG's stat graph ready to print out.

Instead of about 20 people staying up all night long with their big black 3 ring binder books, red, and green markers and the all ever present scale (ruler) I brought the entire stat evolution existence to a 3 man job that was done in an hour or 2 and looked better.

That was all 20 years ago though, I am sure they are moar efficient these days, or are they?

When I finished this program was the night I said outloud at the reception desk "IT IS DONE! God, can you please help me get out of here, I have done enough!"

God blessed me less than a month later!

Oh and as for star rating anything I did?

Fuck that, trial and error was my rule of the day.

    I read the sysadmin manuals.
I read the UNIX searchable help for each and every C command I needed.
    I wrote code.
    I tested it.
If it worked, I embellished it.
If it didn't work I looked at the manual or tried to figure out what they did to fuck it up.
I rewrote anything needed and watched the keystroke logs for errors.

If they only knew what I was doing to figure out how to wire up all the terminals: :shithitfan:

If you were entirely self-trained without even a copy of Kernighan and Ritchie's "The C Programming Language" to hand, I will forgive you for the very numerous "magic numbers" found in the first listing.

    Hmm, curious post.

I was self trained, never even seen that book. After I got out, I bought a copy of Borland C++ for the computer I wound up borrowing $ for so I could program. Again, all I did was use that program and the manual that came with it.

While I was at CLO though, I started getting interested in HEX patterns inside files like database and executables. I used to look at them with a hex editor that I grabbed off a BBS that I used to login to with their telex machines. I got really good with a better hex editor after at ripping apart files and finding patterns of data structures to write formulas to dig out the info needed for the programs I wrote.

Not sure what "magic numbers" you are talking about but I did start taking a liking to patterns. I did put a signature in the programs with some numbers so I could verify if the program was mine in the future if it was worked on by someone who didn't know what I was doing and changed things if that was what you are talking about. Interesting that anyone would notice that but me. Perhaps I grabbed those numbers from what I was learning, I thought they were based on something I had dealt with in the past which was a bit conspiratorial.

    Enlighten me.

"Magic Number" is a computer programming idiom. It refers to the use of hard-coded numerical values in the body of a program instead of meaningfully named constants.

While the functionality of a programming using "magic numbers" may not be at issue, the maintenance of a such a program (for bug fixes, feature additions, file format changes, etc) by someone other than the original programmer can become a total nightmare. Even the original programmer will likely forget what those "magic numbers" mean after a period of time.

Maybe I should post some of my old 'C' code.

This may need some editing in the future, but here goes.

Glad in chat to see a reply. I was really curious, I could have googled magic numbers but decided to wait instead. I have "canistered and buried"' my time at CLO EUS in a time capsule of sorts. Only to be opened if needed.

ESMB changed that, there is probably no coincidence that I have started posting again about the time I started with ESMB, though it seems very random to me.

Random is working its way around me currently and blanketing me in new ways even outside of ESMB. I won't explain that here, but what seems random at first seems to be a pattern of strange obscurity to me currently. I will look back and see it in a new light later but its taking effect on me currently and I don't usually notice that right away like I am now.

    gadz.

Where was I? The chat we had was nice, should copy that here. I was never schooled or formally trained in computers. It is a long story, but the person that inspired me to program and also the person that got me into the CO$ was Garth Bigelow. His blog is here: http://garthbigelow.com if you want to know about me a tiny bit, I am mixed into that entire blur of stuff he did on that blog.

I guess that will have to wait, it has a bandwidth error currently.

Anyway, search for things like "Ultimate Universe" or "UU tips" here is one with me: http://www.convolution.us/uu.html and you might turn up stuff from after I got out of CLO.

Well, back about 1977, Garth showed me how to program in Basic and later in 1984 on my Apple IIe (still have it, who remembers the Beagle Brothers?)

I knew how to program when I got to CLO EUS, but not in anything other than basic and never went to school for it.

When I saw the crap they did at CLO and seeing the computer system they had just installed after the renovations, I saw something I could do and help them with.

I could really care less about them at that point, but I felt sorry for them knowing the power they had in their little closet. Garth programmed in basic, assembly and CMOS V. I had no clue what UNIX or XENIX was, but I wanted at that machine badly.

When I convinced Robert to give me a logon, I went to work on it.
I found the system admin manuals in a locker in the external comm room. there were about 10 of them.

I started to learn how to change directories up to the root. I then set about doing simple shell scripts that did stuff they did by manually typing it all in.

I showed the scripts to Robert and he gave me root access level to install them.

From there I took flight, designing and programming a simple menu system and a logo et al. but the array thing bugged the hell out of me.

Some new EPF graduate named Lor Parsons (blew a few months after this) challenged me to see who could learn how to program in C first. I am not sure why he was interested in that or why he challenged me, but that got my spark lit.

When I read the manuals on the computer about the C language it just seemed to fit. It was like Bourne shell to the max for me. I started recoding and rewriting all my shell stuff into it.

15 hour nights for a year and a half about was what I needed to do this. Nobody told me how to do what I did, it was my own creation, my own world, my sanctuary from THEM, my control.

Eventually, I felt I controlled all of them through my programs, they relied on them and didn't even know it or even recognize what I had done to them.

I thought you decoded my encrypted signature in the programs. Its there, its stupid (looking back on it now) but it was what I had to hold onto when I was where I felt wrong, and didn't want to be. Magic numbers or just stupidity rising out of the earth to freedom. Great question, thank you!
