L. Ron Hubbard Christens the Apollo 43 Years Ago Today: For The First Time, His "Orders of the Day"
By Tony Ortega Fri., Nov. 18 2011 at 4:48 PM

For you Scientology watchers and Scientology history buffs, we think we have something very special for you today.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard sailed around the Mediterranean in a small armada of vessels, going from port to port. Each day, he issued to the hundreds of crew members traveling with him his "Orders of the Day." The Voice has obtained hundreds of these documents, spanning from 1968 to 1971, and we are told that these dispatches -- many of them containing Hubbard's thoughts on the state of his religion, his paranoia about enemies, and his praise and harsh discipline for his crew -- have never previously been published.

We will be gradually revealing material from the orders in coming weeks. But for now, we wanted to start with a significant anniversary -- today happens to be exactly 43 years since Hubbard rechristened his flagship, changing its name from the Royal Scotsman to Apollo. As you will see after the jump, for Hubbard it was a day to feel magnanimous and proud.

First, for you document hounds, lay your eyes on this...

These should be nice and juicy and will most likely do more damage than all of the anecdotal collective evidence we can put out together.

I say let Hubbard be widely circulated in today's limelight and watch it die from its own poison.

Hubbard's prolific and varied body of writings provide a great study into the progression and layers of mental illness.
It is from within those very same writings that Scientologists study to improve their mental health.

When the student's level of mental health fails to reach the depths needed to understand a madman, they are advised to examine each word individually in the hope that by seeing the trees in absolute perfection, they fail to see the forest of madness right in front of them.

Yeah, but OTs can talk to animals.

The comments are fun to read - especally the ot 8 true believer. They used to post the OODs at ASHO when it was on Temple - they would come in weekly and I would read them avidly.

There was mention of the Darby. People would get awards for progress in the Darby and I didn't have a clue what they were about. Then one fine day, there was a SO briefing at AOLA and I asked this SO Officer giving the briefing in the Q&A period what the darby was. He was clearly embarassed by being put on the spot in front of maybe 30 + people, however, he answered my question:

It was a contest to find nests of cockroaches.

If I recall correctly, when you found a nest a messenger had to verify it and it's destruction to get the points or whatever was the award.

Joe Hone, as a committed Scientologist I am here defending the Church of Scientology while simultaneously exposing Tony Ortega as yet the obsequious marionette of Psychiatry.

Because I am a gung ho upstat Scientologist, I support all religions. I would never attack Mary Baker Eddy, Charles Taze Russell, or even James Earl Ray -- and here we mean the James Earl Ray who accidentally killed some people in a sweat lodge (We in the Church of Scientology understand accidental religious deaths only too well).

We in the Church of Scientology believe in something good and right and we take in a lot of money because our message is uniquely persuasive; our flub catching flawless; and our Tech 100% standard or your donation is happily returned after completing some paperwork, paying any freeloader bill, completing A-E and then promptly re-donating your refund back to us so that we do not disconnect you from your family or drown your dog.

We in the Church of Scientology believe that Man is an immortal spirit who is basically good but that Tony Ortega and the rest of the crowd here are exceptions and that you should all be arrested immediately by the Dept of Homeland Security for being terrorists.

Terrorist squirrels who are into child pornography -- and are a part of Jerry Sandusky's den of pedophiles! Oh, and they also tried to attack the Church with anthrax, AIDS, and nuclear radiation and then they tried to put psych drugs into our Kool Aid!
Is guy a troll or what? LOL

[Students] are advised to examine each word individually in the hope that by seeing the trees in absolute perfection, they fail to see the forest of madness right in front of them.

Yes, this seems profound to me, too. It's a much more succinct statement of something I suggested a while ago, that the emphasis on word-clearing is a shrewd tactic for deflecting attention away from bait-and-switch tricks.

I don't see that it is true that "emphasis on word-clearing is a shrewd tactic for deflecting attention away from bait-and-switch tricks".

First, I did the "Primary Rundown" many years ago, which involves first clearing every word in the Student Hat, and then doing the Student Hat.

I enjoyed looking up every word, going over EVERY definition and use, grasp the various contexts, and also understand the "derivation". I did it right, and I NEVER had to do it again. See, if a person is involved in Scientology for any period of time, and has an IQ above 100, he or she should for the most part "be over it".

I do look up any word I am not familiar with. Why not? It makes complete sense to understand all of the words if you want to understand a sentence containing those words.

The false data involved with Hubbard's notions is that any person can understand anything if you understand the words. My suggestion, even back then, to friends who were Scientologists would be, "okay here is a book on basic psychiatry, read it, and tell me what you understand". Of course, knowing that they had a bias against psychiatry, they would say, "but the ideas are stupid". I would say "EXACTLY". Just because something is written and you understand all of the words does NOT mean that you actually "understand anything valid or true".

"The world is flat". You can understand all of the words, but what about the truthfulness of the statament? So, I noticed early on that YES, by all means one should understand all the words in anything one is studying, BUT after that one has to ascertain the veracity of the statement. One can understand all of the words of a Muslim fanatic. So what?

I never got into long "word chains" where I spent hours "clearing words". In fact, after a certain point I rarely cleared words at all. I knew quite a few people who did exactly the same. For many people, word clearing is extremely minor or even non-existant.

Onto my next point.

Second, while it may be true for a SMALL select group that they get obsessed and distracted with "clearing words", it is minor. Most staff study AT MOST 2 1/2 hours per day. And only a very SMALL part of it is concerned with "clearing words". The rest is reading, doing demos, writing essays, etc. And, many public people are NOT "always on course". Many are simply not in any situation where they would have to word clear anything.

There are other aspects of Scientology that make much more sense in terms of "deflecting attention away from bait-and-switch tricks".

For example, while on staff, there is an endless stream of orders, endless "emergencies that MUST be handled right away", and "constant intense pressure coming down the management channels". THAT functions MUCH MORE to keep attention fixated on and away from other questionable aspects of Scientology. One is "kept busy" in Scientology. (Chaucer in the twelfth century called "idle hands the devil's tools".)

Another example would be that the Scientology adherents are SO INCREDIBLY indoctrinated, along a very carefully planned "gradient", involving many unverifiable assertions and claims that are STATED AS OBVIOUS FACTS. The Scn organization is setup so that one learns quickly NOT TO EVER question any of Hubbard's statements. In a sense the Scn system operates to quickly "filter out" anyone who won't readily "tow the line". The people who stay are ONLY the types who will play along with ideas like "only we have the truth", "Scientology is Man's only hope", "we must work harder than ever before if we are to make it", ad nauseum.

It isn't so much that a Scientologist's attention is deflected away, but that he or she is so FILLED with beliefs, faith and fixed ideas about Hubbard's CLAIMS, that he or she CANNOT notice any "bait and switch". It is their own MENTAL STATE in terms of ideas about all-that-is that blocks their perception. There are many aspects to this. For example, the Scn justice system is setup making it a High Crime to denigrate the state of Clear or OT. What that translates to in real living terms is that church members learn fast and hard to NEVER say anything that might be construed as "questioning" these states. Then there is the endless PR and propaganda at events and in orgs where the "wins" of OT are incessantly exaggerated and flaunted in front of the other members.

No Scn member could or would EVER comfortably suggest that there is "bait and switch". Such an idea would be alien to them. They really ARE incredibly "brain-washed", and as a result, are quite unable to see ANYTHING outside the framework of their accepted "model of reality" (i.e "worldview" as determined by Hubbard's ideas). "Word clearing" has something to do with the indoctrination into these "fixed ideas" (belief system), but it has little do do with the actual "mindset" that results from the indoctrination and which blocks the observation of the obvious.

Word clearing is extremely minor in all of that.

Yes, there are some small percentage of people who DO get obsessed with "word clearing", but they tend to be people who have a long history as very BAD students.

Reads like the psycho-ramblings of an internet troll.

It's sarcasm. And I thought it was pretty funny. God help us when writing on the internet gets so "serious" that any hint of sarcasm or irony is dismissed as "trolling." Jokers and Degraders Policy revisited.

Scientology vs. Pollution, a Lisbon Cocktail Party, and More: Sailing on the Apollo Nov. 20-26
Here is an excerpt:

November 23: A flu bug hits the ship. Luckily, those high-level Scientology powers are largely keeping it at bay, Hubbard notes...

EPIZOOTICS: A 48 to 64 hour illness is around. The number is decreasing. The last port of students brought it. High temperature, chills, aches in lower back and legs, strong headache, diarrhea are the symptoms. It hasn't been named as to what it is.

Probably some type of Flu that got loose from a Roche bacteriological warfare project to raise their dividends on anti-biotics sales.

We get a lower percentage than other groups. But that it hits at all shows the need of stepped up auditing action. We have far too few auditors in Qual. Group numbers doubled but Qual auditors didn't. Student and public lines increased but delivery hour potential didn't.

I have now speeded up tech results which should help.

1971

November 20: Hubbard describes his feeling about spreading the wealth...

Welfarism is the idea that the people can get something without exchanging anything. Over 50 percent of the U.S. population at this time is on a hand-out kick. The Great White Father in Washington is supposed to be able to endlessly spend money which it itself is not covered by production. This brings about money worthlessness because the money isn't buying anything.

Our recent survey of Scandinavia shows that the population loves welfare but hates taxes. This in itself is an idiocy. You can't have people all over the place who are not contributing but who are receiving service and money without the tax problem becoming unsolvable. Where is the money coming from?

According to the Socialists' plan and timetable, all those people now on welfare are scheduled for the crematorium. This is why the Socialist has to keep the psychiatrist handy. In Socialist Germany under Hitler the psychiatrist solved the economic problem by cremating anyone who had to be contributed to without contributing. The action was then extended further in order to grab property by cremating those who had wealth that could be seized. So these Socialists, who began all this welfare idea in the first place, are not very nice people after all.

It is this kind of world in which we are trying to remain viable. If we are very clever, if we are well organized, if we keep our eye on the fact that we have to exchange something real and valuable with the society in order to receive support and if we realize that we cannot afford people who think they have to be contributed to and do not themselves contribute to the group, then we will remain viable in spite of world recessions and economic upsets.

SMERSH, Scientology Breakthroughs, and a Funeral: Sailing on the Apollo, Dec 4 - 10

1968

December 8: We found quite a few nice items to excerpt this week, and right off the bat we get a doozy...

PROGRESS

We are continuing to make progress against the enemy who has shot at us and the planet for 18 years.

The code name he now has is "SMERSH" (from 007 fame) and his branch offices are "Black Hats."

He is oddly enough on both sides of existing political parties except in SA where he is mainly UP.

This was a hidden government. It aspired to world domination! If you can imagine a psychiatrist in such a role. He meant to eradicate all boundaries and constitutions and put himself in beside each general and public figure and "treat" them each week. Wonder what it would be like to be governed by shock cases.

Red as paint, he was really having a ball.

We were in his road. Because we were fully effective. We undid his implants. A real psychotherapy had come along. This was not part of his plans. He shot at Scn to discredit it. Because it was effective.

It would be a public service just to get them off the world's back.

Recently a check showed that we had never seen or heard of an "insane" person who had not been in their hands. And the question arises, is there any insanity at all? That is not manufactured by them?

One's first impulse on reading their literature (which is all about world conquest and not about cases as you'd think) is to laugh. Then one realizes they've really got people thinking that way.

So it is quite obvious that western governments are fantastically weak and very unaware. They cannot or will not protect their people or their institutions.

Thus, only one course is left open. To get rid of SMERSH and their thousands of kills weekly.

Oddly enough, we're doing just that.

The one BIG mistake they made was to attack Scientologists. Which they did from hiding for 18 long years.

It set us back, kept our field upset, our staffs enturbulated. But it also made us get tough and grow strong.

SMERSH was the hidden government. Long may it fail.

QUAL AUDITING...

The Commodore's session was disturbed shortly after noon today by banging noises on B deck. Occupants of cabins 134-138 (directly below his cabin) and any persons using B deck, port side, passage way should not have to be reminded that the Commodore researches daily, and anyone who disturbs this goes overboard.

December 9: A day after his SMERSH declaration, LRH points to evidence that someone was listening...

EFFECTIVENESS

The Wog News item of 50 members of a ring being rounded up in Spain who intended to assasinate several leading Spanish Politicians (8 Dec 68 OOD) just could be the result of our comm and warning to the Spanish government re SMERSH.

They evidently deal in political assassination as every major assassin in the last several years saw one of their members just before the assassination and was defended afterwards by one.

From the same dispatch, some unequivocal words about prices...

In answer to Income Clerk's query, the following points apply with No exceptions:

1. Persons leaving SEA ORG get billed for all their courses they may have incurred as FULL price.

2. A Course whether finished or just started is always charged for at full price.

3. Reviews are paid for by the hour and at full price -- includes the leaving Review.

4. If the person has worked at an Advanced Org prior to coming to Sea Org any courses they may have incurred whilst there are also billed for at full price.

We are not in the business of free services and arrangements must be made prior to the person leaving regarding meeting weekly payments for the debt he has incurred with the Sea Org.

TECH BREAKTHROUGH

I have just made a fantastic tech breakthrough.

For some days I have been spending hours each day on a Personality Change Research Project. I find it is not Personality but anti-social behavior that neither the person nor anyone else likes that is the change point.

And I did it. I've got it.

All cases benefit as it speeds exteriorization. It makes OT far more OT faster. Also it resolves the slow case gain case, the no case gain case, also the psychopathic personality and the criminal. The violent and depressed, the well and the sane area all covered now by one process series where the person will sit still.

The Dianetic folder of a pc is used and what's already in it is reworked. It gives a schedule somewhat like this (not finalized):

1. 2 way comm and mimicry
2. TRs (case gain from)
3. Scn singles
4. Dianetic triples
5. Scn triples
6. ACCELERATION PROCESSES
7. Power
8. R6EW
9. Clear
10. OT Grades
11. OT POWER

6 and 11 are the added actions but they can be run almost anywhere that the pc is made auditable.

The substancde of it is to attain at 10 the Really You, one's Basic Personality and full OT Power.

But as a single breakthrough it is ver important as it opens the door not only to fast gains but also rids the universe of oppression.

There WAS a common denominator to all cases good and bad.

SO SAVE THOSE DIANETIC RECORDS AND WORKSHEETS. They are reused in this action and zoom!

Just continue as always on your road up. Nothing is changed. Something has been added that needs all the rest of what we can do.

A Class VI is required to audit it.

You wanted to Clear the planet and end off SPs on the track. Well, boy, we've really got it!

It's been a valuable several days. Thank you for keeping things cool and going so I could work.

LRH, COMMODORE

From the same dispatch...

HEADSTONE

The crew is asked to give contributions to the Chaplain Gilbert Black for a Headstone for Corrie's body's grave.

I will pay the balance of the cost.

The Ship's Rep is to see to getting one made.

At the funeral the services went beautifully smooth and serene. The casket lead-lined, was a fine piece of wood carving and the cemetery is a quiet scene of magnolia and jacaranda trees.

A headstone is needed. I will give the Ship's Rep the inscription. I thought the crew would like to contribute something in memory of their shipmate.

GOOD NEWS

The law banning Scn in Western Australia has been thrown out by the high court of WA. We lost in a lower court but won on the higher court. The law is declared nul and void.

This is a big win that counts heavily in other areas. We're on the road back thanks to MSH and the Gdn Office WW and ANZO and A/G Perth.

ADVANCES

I am very happy with recent technical and administrative advances and very optimistic concerning the potentiality of total success on this planet. Suddenly it is within practical reach.

December 10

...We are unstalling cases at a fabulous rate.

The planetary campaign is lined up on this. Apparently, as people bought it, the psychologists judge on behavior that its all a jungle and that all men are animals.

So evidently there's a grade of "animal" according to the very best professors.

Looking it over, modern "education" and all, we then have the job of moving people up on this course of action with which there would be wide agreement due to teachings in universities.

Animal + Technique Zed = Human Being + Dianetics to Grade IV = Homo Novis + Power, R6EW and CC = Clear + OT grades to OT VII = Operating Thetan + what research I'm now doing equals ( ).

So its a possibly acceptable scale of

( )
OPERATING THETAN
CLEAR
HOMO NOVIS
HUMAN BEING
ANIMAL.

There are a lot of in betweens and a lot of tech but those are the major points.

Anyway, we're rolling it up the line on Flag to put the whole ships company on up to Solo and pick up all the out grades below it.

The time per case on the basic rundown we're using hasn't been added up. Probabaly 4 to 8 hours. That's about, at a guess, 1080 hours for the actual rundown. However there are current pgms and cycles on some cases. So call it to be generous 2000 hours. That's a couple months to repair cases and complete the basic action. Call it 1 February, to include any new persons arriving or new FEBCs. That gives the whole company the basic rundown, should put quite a few on . Dn and Exp Grades on the rest should be completed and the rest on Solo or completed Solo by early summer '71!

You will see, however, the effects of all this (combined with organizing action possible through org breakthroughs) in just two or three weeks.

The place ought to be shedding sparks by 1 February!

Have a nice day!

I've written it here before: SMERSH is a real organization. It was a counter-intelligence group within the Red Army during WWII and it's name derived from the Russian phrase "Smert' Shpionam" (Death to Spies.) Their job was to see that the Red Army was not infiltrated by German military intelligence, and to spy on field grade officers and commisars. The group was disbanded in 1946. Hubbard got his weird ideas about SMERSH from Ian Fleming's James Bond novels, where SMERSH is a gigantic counter-intelligence organization and a stand-in for the spyhunting wing of the KGB.

Hubbard was worried about/fascinated with spies from the early 1940s until his death, and was writing the FBI about various plots from WWII on. He gave them so many useless leads they wrote "appears mental" on the file of his letters. If Tony can get correspondence from L. Ron in the late 1970s, you will see that the conspiracy shifts from SMERSH to the "Tenyaka Memorial" - this being some sort of Asian organization conspiring against him and filling all the functions of the "Soviet" group.

Hubbard needed years of therapy; he got lost in his own fantasy world.
