Infinite Complacency series on Narconon

Since I aim to posting more on this subject, I thought I'd take the
liberty of opening a new thread on my Narconon series.

I published an introduction to the subject a couple of weeks ago:

Narconon is a rehabilitation programme for addicts run on a
system devised by Scientology's founder, L. Ron Hubbard. Experts
say it is based on junk science and potentially lethal.

Today, I ran the second in the series:

Narconon is a variation on “casualty contact”, a recruitment policy
Hubbard developed for Scientology in the 1950s, as internal
documents make clear.

More will follow, but once I start diving into specific cases, it will take time
to assimilate the material. It is intimidatingly complex stuff, but I think
what it reveals about how Narconon operates makes it worth the effort.

Watch this space...

Excellent article and research! Much appreciated

We have seen how, with Casualty Contact and the Illness Research, Hubbard was perfectly ready to stoop to ambulance chasing in the hunt for new recruits.

Narconon should be seen at the logical evolution of this approach.

For with Narconon, Scientologists no longer had to go looking for the sick; now, the sick came to Scientology – or rather its pseudo-medical alter ego.

Ignoring Epilepsy I

I have a new post up, starting a sub-directory of the Narconon section.

In 1984, a French court convicted two Narconon staffers after a
woman died at their centre having suffered repeated epileptic seizures.
Was it their fault alone, or did their negligence spring from Scientology's
teachings?

While the death of Jocelyne Dorfmann has been previously reported,
I don't think there has been much apart from a brief summary that
appeared in a French government report. This account, drawing from
the court judgment itself, gives a little more detail and kicks off a look
at Scientology's attitude towards medicine in general and epilepsy in
particular, which I think is relevant to the Narconon debate.

Comments always welcome at the site.

I've just written up Tory's 'Magoo' Christman's battle with epilepsy -- and how
Scientology's quack treatment almost killed her -- at Infinite Complacency.

It draws mainly on her existing posts, with some supplementary
information from Tory, but I thought it worth doing because it is
an important issue and fits into the series I am currently developing
on Scientology's cavalier approach to epilepsy.

Scientology's insistence that Tory Christman give up her epilepsy
medication almost killed her, she says.

Posted another piece on Narconon last Thursday, on the Dutch authorities
taking an interest in their operation there.

Dutch officials have put Narconon on warning that they are under “enhanced
supervision” – and could even face closure – after spot checks raised concerns
about patient safety.

Got an initially fairly abusive response from someone in the comments section, who
turned out to be the Narconon centre's director, Joanna Kluessien. But she agreed
to tone it down a bit and engage in dialogue with the various suppressives and
degraded beings contributing. So if you have any questions for her feel free to
jump right in...

Refreshing to have a Scientologist who is actually prepared to engage in a little
dialogue.

Just up at Infinite Complacency, a follow-up
to last month's piece on the troubles at the Dutch
Narconon operation.

Since the director of the centre there chose to get
involved for what turned out to be a fairly extensive
debate, it seemed a shame not to build a separate
piece out of it.

Thanks for my regular visitors for keeping the dialogue
going for so long.

The director of Narconon in the Netherlands responded
to our story about the Dutch authorities' tighter supervision
of her operation, providing a unique perspective on the affair.
