Every so often I check on the Web at the Foundation Center to see what is going on with Bless the Children, Inc. Karen Hubbard's charity, or at least to see if they have now lodged their form 990 for 2010.

They look like a CoS front group pretending to be a bona fide charity but now their paperwork has surely lapsed.

The one to watch for a lapse would be Cult Awareness Network. It would be great if they let that one lapse. What a coup if it was bought up by some anons and turned around again! Furthermore ... the way to get past what was done to it the last time ... employ nobody. Have everyone who works for them be a corporate outsource via LLC's.

You can look up FL non-profit corporations at sunbiz.org. Bless The Children, Inc. is still an active FL non-profit which means they are filing the proper reports and paying the proper fees.

To stress again that it all seems very fishy but I looked at every aspect of this organisation back in 2010-2011 and couldn't find that Scientology came into it at all.

Up to the 990 lodged in 2009, everything was hunky-dory.

From memory: Karen Hubbard was getting military surplus supplies donated by some person (where she lived, not in Florida) as a charitable donation which was valued as cash for the purposes of the 990 but was never in fact cash, and this surplus stuff, like building materials, was shipped out by the Air Force I think mainly to Venezuela (or Nicaragua?) where she had a couple of guys who distributed it. It was totally legal as far as I could judge and her declarations were coherent over the years. I couldn't find that Scientology came into it in any way or that she or anyone else in the US benefited. Puzzling but true. She didn't live in Florida but I forget where, VA perhaps.

But then in or about 2009 her contact died, and she was by then in her 60s I think, and control may have passed to a younger relative who was more active in the cult. Which is why I have been waiting for the next 990 (2010), which I cannot find. But there never was lots of cash, and the whole thing may have lapsed.
