What's new

Mavening

Hello to the ex's. I'm one of the Anonymous horde, and a critic. I'm here to describe actions that you can take which would assist Anonymous - actions that former scientologists are exceptionally and especially well equipped to perform.

The Goal Of These Actions
The activities descibed here will not "solve great injustices". They are unlikely to resolve in a crashingly incredible way. These are pressure tactics, intended to place more and greater pressure on the hierarchy of the Church of Scientology. They may seem undramatic and unexciting, but pressure of this kind is the meat and drink of the current effort.

Call Labour Groups
Orgs hire staff for pathetic rates, and then pressure them both socially and religiously in order to extract further labour from them. If you have a personal experience that illustrates this point, call local Labour boards, Better Business Bureaus, and the like. Call anonymously, if you would feel in any way unsafe doing otherwise. But call. Where possible, detail exact practices where staff will lose their jobs if they do not volunteer. If you have time, read over local labour regulations, and put your complaints in those terms (don't try to play lawyer unless you are one). A significant enough mass of complaints will be cause for at least a cursory investigation. It will likely only take a few investigators showing up to create some serious tension.

Call Health & Safety Boards
If at any time you worked in an Org or other installation which had unfinished construction or internal disrepair of any kind that could pose a health hazard, or where the construction itself was performed in unsafe conditions? If you have reason to believe that such practices are occuring in a local office or Org? Make calls, send emails, lodge complains. Again, only a few investigators are enough to ramp the pressure up just one more notch.

News-On-A-Platter
Many reporters, journalists, and other investigators simply don't have much time for research. If you run across something new or current that you think ought to be reported, send in a message to a few media outlets about it. Include links to a solid slice of Church material, outside (court or academic) documentation, and testimony - not just one of those things, but all of them. Practice handing reporters news stories on a platter; you'll push the media coverage through the roof.

Organise Your Stories
There are uncountable stories of abuse and pain on these boards - real ones that deserve notice and attention. It may seem like an insensitive thing to say, but these stories would often be more effective as media devices if they were organised on Blogs, in videos, in formats that are catchy to the eye, concise and sharp to read. The phenomenon of "tl;dr" (too long; didn't read) is painfully real; much of the time, it is hampering the spread of the truth - your truth.

Consider Who To Tell
You have a multitude of facts in your heads. Sharing those facts is honest, legal, and powerful - and that power is increased exponentially when those stories are placed in the hands of the people that will be astonished and driven into action. Did you see or hear something bad? Is there an agency or group that is supposed to do something about it? TELL THEM. Do not be shocked if a given, individual piece of sharing you perform vanishes without a trace, do not lose heart if the efects are slow to appear.

...In effect, what I'm telling you is that you are positioned to act as "Mavens", people who know a lot about a topic and feed the crucial bits to anyone who might act on it. If you do some or all of that? The abusive structures of the Church will crumble all the faster.

Thanks very much for your time and attention, folks.

(Just realised that this might belong in General Discussion. If that is the case, I apologise, and ask that a friendly mod make the move).

Terrific idea, great post.

I haven't heard of "mavening" before, is this a common term?

I think the post is fine here. Criticizing (and evaluating) Scientology includes a lot of things, including 'activism', although, it's not a requirement :)

I think most people look up 'new posts', so, it'll be spotted wherever it is.

It's as Div6 defined it; it's Yiddish.

It was recently made more popular in the recent book "the Tipping point", which is a discussion of how, sometimes, a product, or idea, or social change can become an epidemic. But to do so, a few kinds of people are required...

1. Connectors - People that know everyone, and has ties everywhere. In the current movement, Anonymous fills that role. We go everywhere online, share files at tremendous speed, and can bend even google and Digg to our will in the short term.

2. Salesmen - People that are dedicated to selling the idea, who are smooth, calm, and slick, and can present ideas to groups and people in ways that make sense to them. Mark Bunker is a great salesman. I'm a mediocre one. Most of the best salespeople are "old guard" critics.

3. Mavens - People that know the details; not just the big dirt, but the little dirt, too, and are willing to pick at it, and pick at it, making calls and complaints and corrections, for as long as it takes. Anonymous has a few people that are willing to come at things in this way, but they do not know the little bits of dirt - where the broken toilets and exposed insulation are, where staff are being verbally abused if they don't work harder (and how to catch their bosses in the act), all that.

The people here have everything that is required to create that next step. All you need to do is spot the people who ought to know what you do know, and tell them.

Thankyou Div 6 :D
My education is sorely lacking in places as I abandoned school to join staff. :duh:

Same with me. :eyeroll: I feel like I should have an encyclopaedia with me at all times!

Great post, John.

For people in Australia, the Department of Workplace Health and Safety site is here, and the OH&S guidelines are here. There's a contact button on the sidebar to the left.

The government has a list of departments here that you can search by keyword to find what you're looking for. The Attorney-General's department has a searchable directory of Commonwealth laws here that you can use if you want to be especially thorough when you write up your report(s).

For what it is worth & my experience on a small local paper is of any use, just normal citizens (readers/viewers) can send in a letter or call the city desk and say "what is this thing with protesters at Scientology?" And reporters just looking for ideas may jump in. Truth will out, as they say.

My admiration of anon grows daily. Great stuff! :) Doing
my part in various ways.

Been having a bit of a rough ride from a moderator on
enturbulation.org.

I'm a Freezone maven.

My last thread was binned. This new one below is still current.

Have no idea if you have any influence over there. If so
you may want to put in a word. Anon posted a video or two inviting
the FZ. I was on the streets. Someone started a thread asking
about the FZ. Some asshole who's been attacking me personally for
years went and did his usual spam. ( Alert) The thread got binned for being
to strong for the delicate anon. And me prosyletysing.

Cheers. :)

Not really, no. I'm just another Anonymous, just as it should be.

Hrm. Not sure what to say, here - the normal Anonymous response to "hey, I don't like this moderation" is to simply cross forums, as many of us have a LOT of forums we frequent.

Thing is, I really wouldn't recommend any of the other ones to an outsider. They are, for the most part, incredibly harsh. Think of ARS at it's peak of nastiness, all the time, with the added features of pictures - which might be hilarious, interesting, funny, gory or pornographic, without worry - scatter-sprayed throughout, unspeakably high thread-movement rates, and baffling-to-new-people software architecture. They're kind of the opposite of friendly.

I've been photo shopped as a turd multiple times on OCMB , and other
nonsense. After every post. Been 10 years on ARS. Chased OSA from my door.

I welcome a challenging environment. Lulz. :)

Bring it on!

Need help as i'm a computer klutz. Tried party.van and couldn't figure out
how to join.

I can do green on white. :)

Hope that scares you. :)

Here's the tamest of the lot:

It's fairly slow for a 'chan, but on-topic. And if you're ready for hell:

http://www.4chan.org/

...And visit the /b/ forum. If you do, be ready - that's the random section; it moves REALLY fast, ANY topic is up for grabs, and it's where Anonymous comes from. You might be flamed, agreed with, or utterly ignored; god alone knows.
